Sri Lanka can no longer be ignored
The situation for trapped civilians in Sri Lanka is ‘becoming graver by the day’, says Christian Aid. An estimated 190,000 civilians remain trapped in the fighting, as food, medicine and fresh water supplies run dangerously low for those trying to flee to safety. And the charity says the world must now sit up and take notice.
Uthayan office in Jaffna attacked
The main office of Uthayan Tamil daily in Jaffna came under grenade attack Tuesday night around 11:10 p.m., the administration of the paper told media in Colombo. Tamil media circles added that the attack had come after verbal instructions by the top officials of Rajapaksa government not to publish stories related to civilian casualties in Vanni or reproduce the contents of interviews given by the LTTE officials to news agencies and media. Uthayan and Valampuri newspapers have recently printed photos of children being killed in the Sri Lankan attacks inside ‘safety zone’ in Vanni.
Indian hand seen in attack on Lanka’s team
According to a forensic report, four rocket-launchers and nine explosives seized from the scene are factory-made and used by Indian forces. Forty grenades, 10 sub-machine guns (SMGs), five pistols, 577 live rounds of SMGs and 160 bullets of pistols were also found there. The terrorists had fired 312 bullets, two rockets and detonated two bombs.

Manmohan Singh’s Secretrary to Colombo
India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s cheif personal secretrary Nair is planning to reach Colombo today, to meet Sri Lankan President’s secretrary Lalith Veerathunga. Lankan Government website news sources said that Nair is going to meet higher officials of Lankan government and the talk mainly targets about Indo Srilankan relationship and developments of Public managements. Also it is expected that the Tamils issue be discussed.
India neither urges ceasefire nor federative rule – Ministers of Sri Lanka
In Colombu, there held a press meet yesterday. Nimal Siripala De Silva, Dalas Alagamperumal, Vimal Weeravansa are also the part of the meet, where all parties cabinet ministers took part. Nimal De Silva said that India had never intervene in the ceasefire action or urged to make federative rule. The correction of law had made through India’s intervention.
Two leaders of Sri Lanka breakaway Tamil rebel party clash again
The clash between former leader and the current leader of Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal party (TMVP) is escalating as they blame each other more openly now. The current leader of the TMVP and the Chief Minister of Eastern Province Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan yesterday blamed his former leader and the founder of the party, Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna, saying that Karuna is attempting to kick him out of the government.

Over 1,200 HR violation complaints lodged in Jaffna peninsula in 2008 – HRC report
More than 1,200 incidents relating to human rights violations by Sri Lanka armed forces and paramilitary men have been registered with Jaffna Human Rights Commission (HRC) office in the year 2008 alone, according to the HRC report to Colombo HRC Head Office. The incidents are mainly about extra judiciary killings, abductions, forced disappearances, death threats, torture and harassment, HRC Jaffna said.
