New Democrats in Canada join Tamils in demanding action on Sri Lanka
New Democrats on Wednesday joined the protesting Tamils on Parliament Hill, calling on Canada to create pressure on the United Nations for ensuring safety for all civilians in Sri Lanka and for humanitarian aid to be distributed to those in need, especially in the concentration camps.
Although New Democrat leader Jack Layton was not in Ottawa today, he passed along a message to the protesters through fellow New Democrat MP Peter Julian (Burnaby-New Westminster).
Tamils will never get a justice from Sri Lankan government
“Vanni IDPs sheltered in transit centres in Cheddiku’lam cannot expect justice under the Sri Lanka’s law. Law of the country does not show any interest on these IDPs. I openly say this. The authorities can penalize me for telling this,” said Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva when he addressed a public meeting which followed the ceremonial opening of a court complex at Marawila in Negombo district Tuesday. These transit centres are described as internment camps by human rights activists.
Jaffna Bishop seeks release of 6 Catholic priests held in Vavuniyaa
Jaffna Bishop Rt. Rev. Joseph Saundaranayagam in a letter has requested Defence Secretary to release six Catholic parish priests who are held in an undisclosed Sri Lanka Army (SLA) internment camp in Vavuniyaa, sources in Jaffna said.
The six Catholic priests were serving as parish priests in Vanni and had sought refuge in Puthumaaththalan when Sri Lankan military intensified its offensive on Vanni.
Sinhala Thugs attack Tamil Protesters at Parliament square
Sinhalese thugs attacked the peaceful Tamil protesters on Tuesday night at about 8.30 pm and the incident is said to have been reported to the police. At 12.00 midnight the protesters were at parliament square with no police on sight. Today the Sinhalese thugs had returned at 23.32 pm in a blue Benz X5 car and had provoked the peace protesters but the thugs had driven away through the Victoria road when they were chased by the protesters.
MIA’s endorsement expected to boost Jananayagam’s MEP prospects
Oscar and Grammy award nominee, Eezham born music phenom, Maya Arulpragasam (MIA), offered a free song, and has initiated an online campaign appealing to British voters to elect Ms Janani (Jan) Jananayagam, a Jaffna born young banking professional, as a Member of European Parliament (MEP) in the June 4th elections. “Vote to Jan could save 300,000 [Tamil] people [in Sri Lanka],” MIA’s entry in Myspace, and a linked twitter message said. Ms. Jananayagam is contesting the London electoral region as an independent candidate, and MIA’s support is expected to convince young British fans to exercise their votes, a campaign organizer said.
UK government under fire over arms deals with Sri Lanka
News that the UK government has licenced multi-million pound arms deals with the Sri Lankan government has triggered outrage amongst campaigners and MPs.
Sales of over worth of military equipment worth £13 million were approved by UK authorities in the last three years during which there has been vicious fighting and a heavy death toll in Sri Lanka’s civil war. Items included armoured vehicles and machine – gun components as well as small arms, according to an investigation revealed in the Times newspaper.
UN Security Council to discuss Sri Lanka on Friday
The UN Security Council plans to meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon this week to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka for the first time since fighting ceased in the island nation, the council’s president said Tuesday.
Ban will brief the 15-nation council behind closed doors on Friday and it will be an ‘unofficial, interactive dialogue,’ said Turkish Ambassador Baki Ilkin, whose country presides over the body in June. He provided no other details.

Hunger strike of British Aid worker enters 16th day
Tim Martin, director of Act Now, a rights group formed by former British aid workers in Sri Lanka, is on a hunger striek in Parliament Square, London, calling for intervention by U.S. and other Governments to protect the massacre-survivors from the Safety Zone in Mulliaththeevu, currently being interned in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) supervised camps in Vavuniyaa. Martin handed a letter to Mr Kerry McCarthy MP, and Mrs Kerry when they visited him, and asked the MP to hand over the letter to U.S. President Obama, well wishers at the Parliament square said.
