Tamil political prisoners in Welikada go on fast unto death demanding their release

A group of Tamil political prisoners detained in Welikada prison went on a fast unto death on Wednesday inside the prison complex demanding the authorities either to release them or to produce them in court.

These prisoners are detained for many years without being charged with any crime and not being produced in court.

Military officials’ appointment to high civil posts may cause discontent in civil administration

In a significant move, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed high military officials both serving and retired to a number of top and strategic positions in the government and semi-government corporations, giving birth to dissatisfaction in civil administration.

Maj Gen G A Chandrasiri, who held the fort in Jaffna during the war, was made Governor of the Northern Province, which includes 16,000 sq km of recently captured territory.

IMF rejects a request from Innercity Press on the terms and conditions of the loan to Srilanka

 Reports state the IMF has rejected a request from the U.S based Innercity Press who asked for the terms and conditions under which the 2.5 billion U.S dollar loan was granted.

The Innercity press filed a report saying this loan provided by the IMF would be used against the Tamils to destroy them and requested for the terms and conditions under which the approval was given.

It is reported that India’s Foreign Ministry is placed in a deep quandary, for  there is no one to take over as the Indian HC to SL after Alok Prasad.
