Govt. adopts double standards says JVP

The JVP said yesterday this government did not want to engage in the war against the LTTE genuinely but went for it as it realised that it could get political advantage from it. JVP General Secretary Tilwin Silva told an election rally in Kadawatha yesterday that the government was pushed to declare war against the LTTE because of the extensive protests by the people especially after the Mawil Aru issue.

Mr. Silva also recalled that JVP too played a role during this period in pressurising the government. “The government was pushed to go for war because of this pressure and also due to its realisation that it would get political mileage out of it,” he said. He also slammed the government further stating that it has adopted double standards.

JVP General Secretary explained that the government has two separate teams for promoting patriotism and another for promoting devolution of power. He charged that the team which promoted devolution of power was engaged in satisfying the international community including India. “The other team which promotes war is used to win elections,” he said.

JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe said the government which is corrupt was wasting public funds in an unprecedented manner. He said political games of this government would not last for long. The rally was shown live on the party’s website yesterday thus making the JVP the first political party in Sri Lanka to relay its rallies on internet.
