UNP’s false propaganda to the world community should be stopped
President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the challenge before voters in the Western Province at the forthcoming PC polls is to dismiss the false propaganda spread by UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and his friends in the international community about the ongoing humanitarian operations in the north. Addressing the Gampaha SLFP Central Committee at the temple trees yesterday President Rajapaksa said both Mr.Wickremesinghe and his foreign friends were attempting to get the Tigers off the hook by saying that the humanitarian operations are not correct and meant for killing the people.
He added after 2005 the government took a genuine effort to resolve the ethnic problem through a dialogue and the govern did not go to war when over 200 armed forces personnel got killed and when there were attempts on the lives of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Army Commander Sarath Fonseka.
President said they lost out patience when Tamil Tigers closed Mavil‐Aru anicut depriving water to 15,000 farmers and putting over 50,000 innocent civilians in thirst.
He added the humanitarian operations begun with the re‐opening of the Mavil‐Aru anicut has been able to restrict the LTTE to a 4 square stretch by now after conquering the entire territory held by terrorists that covered one third of Sri Lanka.
President said when the UPFA won the eastern provincial council election the UNP charged that the government was holding elections where it can win easily and the eastern province was won using the euphoria of war victories. He adde now they had different excuses for the thumping victories achieved by the UPFA at the North‐Central, Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Central PC polls and challenged the UNP to win the Western Province if possible.
President stated Now it was the responsible of the voters of the Western Province to pay their gratitude to the government, as this government had saved the country and at the same time has launched a huge development drive.
