Tim Martin Ends Hungerstrike After 21 Days

Tim Martin ends his hunger strike after 21 day battle, he gave a speech thanking the Tamil community for supporting him. Tim was appraised by many protesters and was thanked for all his efforts, as a non-Tamil he stood up for the innocent people. As Tim was a former aid worker in the Vanni area he has witnessed the troubles that the Tamils experienced.

Tim has passion for the Tamils and has fought hard to gain attention from Obama, all protesters believed that Obama would make a change, but disappointingly no action has been taken.

The decision to end the hunger strike came about after 5 offers were put forward to Tim Martin. These are as follows:

  1. Celebrity Debra Leng and husband Roger Taylor are organising a function on 18th June, attendees include Bob Geldof. Tim Martin has also been asked to attend where he will be distributing leaflets and making people aware of the situation in Sri Lanka, aiming to open the eyes of other celebrities of the atrocities in Sri Lanka.
  2. A TV presenter produced a documentary about Tim on the 19th day of the hunger strike. This will be given to Obama’s spiritual advisor Rev Michael Beckwith, who has promised to ensure that Obama receives and watches the documentary.
  3. Tim will be flying to Geneva together with students to meet the countries who have made decisions against Tamils, like China and Russia. They aim to explain the in situation and show them petitions received from people affected in the Vanni area in the expectation that they change their views so that UN can take action.
  4. British Tamil Forum has had great concerns about Tim’s health, and feels that someone with such enthusiasm should be in the public helping the Tamils rather than performing a hunger strike.  Tim is the only non-Tamil who has come forward to help and has experienced the struggles in the Vanni area. “Act Now” is currently working with 55 MPs and their support is greatly needed. An official letter was given by the BTF requesting Tim to end his hunger strike.
  5. A meeting with Kerry McCarthy MP has been organised on Wednesday from 2-3.30pm. The meeting will be held at parliament. This will be an opportunity for Tamils to speak up and raise their views. Students are urging that the people who are directly affected by the situation in Sri Lanka and people who have contact with anyone in the camps in the Vanni area to come forward and attend the meeting. They are also requesting the public to contact their local MPs and demand them to attend this meeting to make them aware.  Media like the Times Newspaper and Channel 4 News will be covering the meeting so its important that they know the truth about the situation in Sri Lanka.

The student hunger strikers who performed a 24 hour hunger strike yesterday ended today at 1pm, they were faced with severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, but were determined to continue their protest.

Students continue the fight despite the end of Tim’s hunger strike. The protest will continue for as long as it takes for the world to take action. Students are urging the Tamils not to give up and continue to attend as the protest as it is entering a crucial time. Further permission has been granted for the protest to continue so there is no reason to stop. Let’s not forget our struggling people in Vanni, its your duty to do everything within your power and most of all show your support at Westminster, the time has come to Shout For Freedom!
