Eastern Provincial Minister, 2 others surrender in courts in assault case, obtain bail
The Eastern Provincial Minister of Agriculture Thuraiappah Navaratnarajah along with his and two others on Monday surrendered in Kalmunai Magistrates’ Court in an assault case and sought bail.
Accepting their bail prayers, the court allowed them in personal bail in a sum of rupees 100,000.
According to complaints filed by police to court that the provincial minister and two others allegedly assaulted a Muslim civilian with their hands, legs and guns on July 13. The victim came under attack when he was driving his three-wheeler along Maruthamunai-Kalmunai road.
Kalmunai Magistrate N.M.M.Abdullah directed the suspects to make statements to the police and fixed the case for inquiry on August 18. The magistrate on July 14 issued open warrant against the minister and two other suspects and ordered the police to arrest and produce them in court and fixed the case for July 27.
However, their lawyer told the court that they had come to understanding with the complainant to settle the case and the complainant too told court that he had consented to settle the dispute.
