Tamil political prisoners in Welikada go on fast unto death demanding their release

A group of Tamil political prisoners detained in Welikada prison went on a fast unto death on Wednesday inside the prison complex demanding the authorities either to release them or to produce them in court.

These prisoners are detained for many years without being charged with any crime and not being produced in court.

Sources said the prisoners were compelled to launch this campaign as they have been languishing in jail for many years.

Over 200 Tamils arrested on suspicion that they were LTTE men in the past are detained in several prisons for several years without facing any investigation or cases in courts.

However, Sri Lankan prison authorities claimed that no fast unto death campaign is being held by any group inside the prison complex.
