Indian Field Hospital here for 2 more months

On the request of the Sri Lankan government, India has decided to extend by another two months the tenure of the Indian Armed Forces Field Hospital Unit that provides relief to the internally displaced Tamil civilians.

A Defence Ministry communiqué said this was the second extension granted by the Indian government. The field hospital unit had been providing humanitarian service to the war‐affected Tamils at the Manik Farm Camp since March.

It has a 60‐member medical team comprising surgeons, pediatricians, medical specialists and a lady medical officer.

The team so far has treated more than 21,000 displaced Tamils including cases of gunshot wounds, trauma, head injuries and those related to general surgery and orthopedics.

India sent its second medical team in July to relieve the first team, which was working since March and it is carrying out yeomen service by providing urgent medical aid.

Some of the treated casualties at the Indian Armed Forces Field Hospital Unit relate gripping accounts of the extent of the treatment provided by the team that has made a difference to those affected.
