BEGGARS ARE ILLEGAL – Mahinda Sindana

Brutal killing of beggars continues in Sri Lanka, which started just few weeks before IIFA (Bollywood Oscars) held last month. Sri Lankan politicians in recent years have described beggars as a “nuisance” and in the past they have been periodically deported to a notorious camp far away in the south of the country. At least seven homeless people or beggars, most of them disabled, have been murdered crushed with rocks or beaten with poles as they slept, in the space of a few weeks.

Is there a serial killer or a well-organised group behind it?  This kind of brutality cannot come from an ordinary citizen, a fellow beggar who wants to rob, and it’s beyond their capacity. Prime Minister, DM Jayaratne’s allegation saying that the members of the defeated Tamil Tiger movement are posing as beggars to gather information, is nothing but a joke. The media in Colombo have given little attention to these killings.  May be it’s one of many steps in making Sri Lanka a paradise. May curse fall upon Mahinda Sindana.
