807 civilians killed and more than 1200 injured within the last 7 days
Sri Lanka Military’s atrocious attack on the safe zone within the last one week has left 807 civilians killed and more than 1200 injured. In an attempt to capture the safe zone before dawn of the New Year, Sri Lankan Military intensified its indiscriminate attack on safe zone. On last Sunday’s (12.04.2009) dawn attack 300 shells exploded inside safe zone within just 45 minutes, it is reported.

At least 40 civilians were killed and more than 258 including 100 children injured in artillery shelling fired by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) targeting a child care centre and milk powder distribution centre at Pokkanai today (Wednesday). Hospital sources said at least 25 dead bodies have been rushed to the makeshift hospital and 13 of them were identified by medical authorities.

Subasan, a 24-year-old fisherman originally from Muzhangkaavil in Naachchikkuda, displaced at least 29 times to date and now wounded in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) shelling inside the so-called safe zone, told TamilNet correspondent in Vanni Sunday, that his family is traumatized by the daily hardships, and that his family faces starvation due to shortage of food. Subasan said his family lead a reasonably comfortable life from his earnings from fishing. His dire economic situation has forced his pregnant wife to now sell their tarpaulin sheet for Rs.1,400 to take care of him.

The Sri Lanka armed forces continue the destruction of the Tamil race with 29 civilians killed and 31 seriously wounded yesterday. The declared safe zones of Maathalan, Ambalavanpokkanai and Valaignarmadam, which have been declared as safe zones, are being bombarded using heavy artillery guns, multi-barrel launchers, and rocket propelled grenades (RPG) including 50 calibre guns.The details of 27 of the 29 people killed have been identified, with two bodies yet to be released.

A group of around 50 Sinhala expatriates, some of them allegedly inebriated, attacked a car-rally demonstration organised by the Eezham Tamil diaspora in Melbourne Saturday noon protesting genocide of their kith and kin in the island of Sri Lanka and demanding immediate end of the war waged by Colombo government. A few Eezham Tamils were injured and their cars were damaged in the attack. One of the attackers also reportedly got injured in the melee.
