At least 12 pregnant women were killed in artillery shelling fired by Sri Lanka Army in March, according to a Mullaiththeevu Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS) report, a copy of which was obtained from Vavuniya District Secretariat. The details were recorded by the Mullaiththeevu Director of Health, and pertain to pregnant mothers who attempted to receive treatment through the Health Directorate.

Another Media Personal Assaulted in Sri Lanka

A journalist from the Maharaja Broadcastings “Sirasa TV” has been assaulted by a group of people at the Vihara Maha Devi Girl’s school in Kiribathgoda. The attackers of the journalist suspected to be the supporters of the controversial Labour Minister Mervyn Silva. The Sirasa journalist has gone to the school premises to cover a protest by the parents of the students. The suspected group have assaulted the journalist and damaged his camera equipment, police confirmed.

Aged civilian in SLA detention centre dies in Jaffna without treatment

An aged civilian held in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) controlled detention centre in Mirusuvil in Thenmaraadchi died Saturday night in Jaffna Teaching Hospital due to delayed treatment, sources in Jaffna said. The victim identified as Anthonipillai Philipaiya, 62, who had been suffering from some diseases, was one of the civilians fleeing war in Vanni and was detained in the centre located in Mirusuvil Catholic Church premises.

More than 109 children below the age of 15 have sustained injuries.

Uthayan office in Jaffna attacked

The main office of Uthayan Tamil daily in Jaffna came under grenade attack Tuesday night around 11:10 p.m., the administration of the paper told media in Colombo. Tamil media circles added that the attack had come after verbal instructions by the top officials of Rajapaksa government not to publish stories related to civilian casualties in Vanni or reproduce the contents of interviews given by the LTTE officials to news agencies and media. Uthayan and Valampuri newspapers have recently printed photos of children being killed in the Sri Lankan attacks inside ‘safety zone’ in Vanni.

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) continued to fire artillery shells into the ‘safety zone’ and killed at least 166 civilians, 42 on Saturday alone, in last four days. On Saturday, SLA fired shells into safety zone also caused injuries to at least 80 civilians, including a GS (Village officer), according to reports from Vanni.  The SLA and Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) used heavy explosives during clashes with the LTTE defensive units in Puthukkudiyiruppu (PTK) area on Saturday. At least 7 civilians who went to Iranaippaalai to collect coconuts were killed in SLAF air strike.
